Misunderstandings of a Popular Belief of Equality

by Madison Faulkenburg

Feminism. I know what you're thinking. Feminists are bad, they hate all men. Well, that's one of the many misconceptions about feminism and feminists.

Many people, including women, believe that maybe a woman is wrong to say something and that the man is being truthful.

I believe that the men should prove the women wrong instead of the other way around.

Here’s an example from Grey’s Anatomy, spoiler alert. A doctor on the show had left her husband to have a new life and be her own person. Then her husband, who was a bad man, found her. The audience only knows the bad things that the woman has said about him.

Fans of the show know the doctor has been on it for about three years and her husband about two episodes. We don't know him at all, but we know the doctor. Some people would automatically assume that the doctor, a woman, was lying after her husband told a different story.

Feminism started with women’s suffrage. Women wanted equal rights.

The definition that people use about feminism is completely wrong. One of the main misconceptions are that feminists are cruel and hate men. As the definition states, feminism is the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes.

Another misconception is that men cannot be feminists because they are not females. This is completely wrong. Men and women alike have their own opinions and beliefs so both sexes can be feminists, just like women can be sexist.

One of many misconceptions that is completely incorrect is that feminists are crazy women. That is not true. Yes, some women can be hardcore in their fight for equality, but that does not mean they are not crazy.

"I believe that the men should prove the women wrong instead of the other way around."

Many women are feminist. It's not uncommon to meet one at school or on the street. In this day and age, women should be respected and heard just like men are every day.

People should understand what feminism actually means, and if you believe that women should be treated as equals, speak your mind and defend them. Stand up for what you believe in.
