Soundcloud, a website dedicated to letting users upload different songs and sounds, has been booming recently. Rap music on Soundcloud has quite a far reach, even to northern Indiana. At first glance, it may seem that New Prairie High School students are casual fans of the art. But if you dig deeper, you’ll find that some students are making their own music.

Soundcloud is currently a prominent source for rap music. While the website allows users to create music and sounds of any type, rap is arguably the most popular. Rap artists are currently dominating the top 50 weekly tracks of all genres (as of January 22). Ethan Goodman, a junior at NPHS, has been making music on Soundcloud for around 3 years. “[I’ve been making music] since I was like 6, and Soundcloud for about 2 or 3 years now.” Said Goodman. Goodman also stated that he’d like to turn his art into a career, which he’s actively trying to do. Goodman went into detail on where he gets his inspirations from. “It depends on my point in life. If it’s sad, it’s gonna be sad as heck.” said Goodman. “Most of it’s sad stuff, but some of it’s happy.” Goodman mentioned getting ideas from EDM and rap, but not one artist in particular.

Goodman’s most recent track, “Can’t Sleep,” is a mellow, electronic heavy track about missing sleep due to missing someone. It starts slow, keeping its pace and breathing emotion into the listener for just over four minutes.

Ethan currently has 13 tracks on SoundCloud, with a solid 96 followers. Love it or hate it, rap is at an all time high at NPHS.
