The Book Peddler and Rosie awards are both new to New Prairie High School. The Book Peddler is an award that Mr. Holman created and students who read books can receive it.
Qualifying for the Book Peddler award revolves around a point system. A student can attend Cocoa Cafe to earn 3 points. Cocoa Cafe is a book club that meet on Fridays after school in the library.
They can add writing to the peer choice shelf, which is as simple as putting a book on the shelf and writing a few sentences about why someone should read that book. This would earn them 5 points.
Afterwards, a recommendation can to be made to a student about a book. Whenever Mr. Holman hears that a student got a book suggestion from another student, he gives the person who made the recommendation 10 Book Peddler points.
Finally, an article can be written reviewing a book in the Cougar Chronicle or Broadcast Media. When the student wins this award, a picture of them will be placed on the lower right hand corner of the “trophy.” The name of the book will also be listed.
This is to encourage more students to read more. The promotion of reading in our school can lead to increased skill levels and more advanced reading for students.
The Rosie Award is a title honoring a book that the New Prairie community thinks is deserving. This award has been around since 1996, but this is the first time it has been brought to our school. For the Rosie Award, the books are chosen by different librarians and teachers all around. Indiana students are allowed to nominate different books for this award.
The books for the 2019/2020 elections are all finished and finalized, but there is currently a chance to nominate some books for the 2020/2021 Rosie Award.
If a student or staff member would like to nominate a book for the award, they can visit the Eliot Rosewater Award web page at https://www.ilfonline.org/page/eliotrosewateraward.
This award is for books to win, not for students or staff to win. There is a section in the school library that has the group of books that our student body can vote for and these are the only books that can win the Rosie award. Only Indiana high schoolers can vote.
Students have been able to vote for a book since the award was established. The books that have previously won the award are listed on the school website, in the library section. There are other books around the library that have been nominated for the award that did not win, as well as other books in the library that won the award.
