The Humane Society of Saint Joseph County is one of Indiana’s oldest service organizations and the areas largest animal care facility.

The Humane Officers get more than 4,600 “cruelty, neglect, nuisance, and abuse calls each year,” according to the Humane Society St. Joseph County Website.

The Humane Society of St. Joseph County is the animal control and shelter agency for eleven different areas, including New Carlisle.

Unlike others, this Humane Society states on their website that they do not euthanize animals because of space or time limitations. Therefore, they “can only accept animals from within [their] jurisdictions.”

This Humane Society’s motto is “WE CARE” and because of their many community services and educational programs, they really show that they do.

Currently, there are 315 animals in the shelter. There was 3,351 animals seen in 2018.

To adopt an animal, adoption hours are 12:00pm to 5:30pm on Monday through Saturday. They are closed on Sundays.

During the adoption hours, people can view and do play-times with the adoptable pets.

If people don’t want to adopt, but would like to donate, the office is open from 8:30 to 5:30pm Monday through Saturday. During these hours, people can also surrender animals, obtain pet licenses, and look for their lost pets.

“Lady Luck’s Surgery Fund”, a cause for a stray cat, currently needs donations. Lady Luck was found after she possibly got hit by a car. The society is not sure because she is a stray.

Lady Luck has a broken leg and needs surgery. People can donate at humansocietystjc.org or go right to the building which is located at 2506 Grape Rd in Mishawaka, IN 46545.

Volunteering at the St. Joseph Humane Society starts with a 2 session initial training. Then, ongoing training and specialized training is provided for volunteers based on their needs and interests.

To volunteer, RSVP on the website to the next Volunteer Info Session, which will be held on Thursday April 4th at 6-7pm.
