You Need a Physical for a Sport, But Not a Gym Class.

A physical examination is something students need to pass to participate in sports. Usually during a physical examination, the physician will record your weight and height, test your vision, take your blood pressure, and check your heart and your lungs in order to make sure that you are healthy enough to participate in any sort of physical activity. Then why don’t students need a physical for gym?

It turns out you don’t need a physical examination for gym class. People have opinions on this controversial topic.

“I feel like in gym class there isn’t as much competition [as there is] in a sport. In a sport you have to work together and get along with each other to win the event. In gym class you don’t have to compete much. As long as you participate you get your point to pass the class.”

Sophomore Yazmin Parras’s final thoughts were to just have fun because you never know if you like a sports and want to try out for it.

Freshman Luis Yado said that all students should have a physical for gym class and for sports because it is important to monitor their health.

Freshman Abi Walker thinks athletics present a greater risk of injury than gym class.

“I think it makes sense because gym isn’t as competitive or active as most sports, so people are less likely to get injured,” Walker said. “Gym is more laid back than high school sports and it’s more just to have fun instead of compete, so people can be involved no matter what condition they are in,” she added.

A physical exam is something that can be done at your doctor’s office. The doctor will test your vision, record your height and weight, check heart and lungs, and they will take blood pressure. A majority of students believed that they should have a physical for both so they could monitor your progress. It could also be just a precaution.
