A recent film about an infamous Mexican folktale of La Llorona came out on April 19, 2019 for the entire world to see.
The Latino and Hispanic community have been going crazy about it and as well as other people who already know about La Llorona.
And of course, I went to go see it and gave the film four out of five stars.
The film starts out in the 1600s in Mexico with a family playing in a field. The youngest son of the family gives the mother a necklace she would eventually keep forever.
As the youngest son closes his eyes, his family disappears into thin air. Being only a little kid, he was scared and he went looking for his mother.
Once he found her, the youngest son saw his older brother being drowned by their mother. The youngest son then runs away, but it was already too late because his mom snatched him away and drowned him too.
Long story short, the film cuts off to the 1970s and follows widowed wife and social worker, Anna Tate-Garcia, played by Linda Cardellini, and her son Chris and daughter Sam as they try to fight the curse of La Llorona.
The film is a part of “The Conjuring Universe” franchise, so there is one cross-over in movie with Father Perez from the “Annabelle” film series.
He ends up explaining who La Llorona is to Anna later in the movie and directs her to a former priest of the church that ends up helping the Garcia family in the fight with La Llorona.
The film itself is rated R and is said to be a horror and violent film, but in my opinion, it was more of a suspenseful, thriller, and action movie. There were a few jump scares here and there but it wasn’t that terrifying to watch.
The film mostly kept me on the edge of my seat because you would never know La Llorona’s next move, but once you think the movie is over it really isn’t.
If you’re a big fan of horror films then this movie is probably not for you. With the amount of jump scares that there are, this film could be a date night movie or even if you need a little scare once in a while this is the perfect movie for you.
