Ryan North, author of many books such as, Romeo and/or Juliet, Adventure Time, The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Series, and many others, is coming to New Prairie High School on November 8th!
This author will give about a thirty minute talk and afterwards will stick around for book signing.
North is a Canadian author who started off his writing career with Dinosaur Comics. He has since published fifty books and counting. Most of his books are comic books.
He has won four Harvey Awards because of Adventure Time in 2013 and 2014 for Humor in the book twice and Best Original Graphic Publication for Younger Readers twice.
He won three Eisner Awards in 2013 and 2017 for Best Publication for Kids toward Adventure Time, Best Humor Publication in Jughead, and Best Publication for Teens for The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl.
North also won one Alex Award for Romeo and/or Juliet. He was nominated for an additional eleven other awards as well.
One staff member who is especially excited for North’s visit is the New Prairie librarian, Blake Holman. Holman’s favorite books of his are The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl series.
“I think [The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl] has such a great character. The main character is just so unique and really funny. I think it’s the likeable main character that just really gets me with that one.”
Holman invited North to come to New Prairie because he thought it would be nice for the students to see and hear from a real life author.
“I just wanted the students here to see an author so that they can get an idea of a professional writer as a real person. Obviously you know they’re out there because there’s books in the world, but to actually see someone who does it, I think, is motivating for people who want to be creative writers or creative in any sense,” Holman said.
Instead of picking a different author, Holman chose North because he thinks his books have a wider variety than some others.
“I feel like Ryan North is very approachable as a person and as a writer. His works are easy to pick up. I wanted a writer who was accessible that way.”
A way students and staff can get ready for this event is getting a Ryan North written book to read and get signed. North’s books are available on Amazon.
A different option for reading a Ryan North book is just checking one out at the New Prairie Library.
Another way students could prepare for Ryan North’s visit, is it is to check out his fan club newsletter. It comes out about every month.
