With graduation just around the corner, many seniors can’t wait until that moment they can finally say they graduated high school. However, many seniors don’t know there are a variety of different scholarships available here at New Prairie.
Seniors are the only students who are eligible for these scholarships. The best part about applying for a scholarship is that they are free to apply for.
Here at New Prairie there are a variety of scholarships available, but here are three out of the many, which are available inside the library. All scholarship winners will be announced at the Senior Awards Program.
The Marianne Woolsey Scholarship is being held by the Delta Beta Phi Sorority in memory of a dedicated member and a retired New Prairie teacher, Marianne Woolsey. In order to apply for this scholarship, students must be a senior, graduating in the spring of this school year, and provide a letter of acceptance to a college, university, or trade school of their choice. An autobiographical essay composed of 150-200 words must also be completed as part of this application process. Along with the autobiographical essay, another essay is needed. This essay is longer and must be composed about of how community service is important in the world today. The applications will be collected from the guidance office on April 26th. The Saugany Lake Scholarship is another scholarship available for all seniors who have been accepted to an accredited college or a trade school. All seniors who are applying for this scholarship must have maintained a minimum of a “C” average in high school. The main component of this scholarship is the essay. This essay has a minimum of one page and it must include: how is the world benefiting by protecting the environment, description of volunteer work and activities the student have been involved in, the college or university which the student has been accepted to, the course of study they plan to take, and the students’ future goals. The deadline for this scholarship has been extended and is now May 17th.
Olive Elementary PTO is also giving away a $1,000 scholarship to a lucky senior who applies for this scholarship. In order to qualify for this scholarship, the senior must have attended Olive Elementary for at least three years and the applicant must attend a post secondary school with at least a two year curriculum. One part of this scholarship process requires an application with information about the applicant and about the college they plan to attend. The second part of the application is a reference form. They need to list two references known to them as teachers, ministers, community leaders, etc. The last part of this application process is to write a 1000 word essay on “What Olive Meant to Me.” The deadline for this application is May 1st.
There are many other scholarships available in the library. Make sure to apply for as many as possible. It can greatly help with the cost of college.
