Swimmers have improved overall this season, but two seniors value more than just their 7-7 record. Senior night is a night to remember as swimmers take their last competitive dip in the NP pool.
“This season was different from others because we had so many people willing to work hard and really good attitudes. Everybody in the team just seemed to work so much better together and were a lot more positive than last year,” said senior varsity swimmer Beth Armstrong.
This season, the Lady Cougars have been able to try many new techniques in swimming, and have had a more successful season than their last.
“I think this season was different because we had had a really tough season last year, not a lot of wins, and not a lot of teamwork or team bonding. This year it just felt like everything clicked back and we all were there to support one another, which overall gave us a better season record and a better team experience overall,” said varsity senior Meggan Goldenstern.
Swimming is both an individual and team sport. Armstrong said that the team needs everyone for points in relays. This means if one person is down, it could bring the whole team down.
Both Armstrong and Goldenstern made some big accomplishments over the course of the season.
“I was able to drop a lot of time in my 100 yd breaststroke and that was something I have been working towards for a really long time,” said Armstrong.
Goldenstern even got to try a new technique of swimming this season.
“This season I have gotten my personal best in the 50 free, 50 fly, and started swimming distance which I had never done before,” said Goldenstern.
This season the seniors have been working hard on improving times and trying to lead underclassmen.
“Our seniors have improved over the season by dropping a lot of time and trying new events. A lot of us have gotten the chance to try something new at least once, and that’s pretty neat. All the seniors have been great at leading the girls and setting good examples for them as well,” said Armstrong.
On January 14th the swim team celebrated the seniors at senior night. They had a ceremony and sentimental gifts planned by the juniors.
“To see everyone who has supported me throughout my twelve years of swimming all in one place cheering me on really made it feel really special. That night you really get to see how proud your friends and family are of how far you’ve come. It was just a really special feeling to be supported by so many people,” said Goldenstern.
On senior night all the eyes are on the seniors. Since all eyes are on the seniors, some feel pressure to do their very best.
“I felt like there was more pressure to do my very best because it was senior night. I just felt that since it was our night, then all eyes were on us, and I didn’t want to fail anybody, especially since we were the focus of the entire night. I actually did end up having one of my best meets which is pretty awesome considering it was senior night,” said Armstrong.
As the senior’s season is coming to an end, Armstrong said she hopes they carry on the traditions they have all made. Goldenstern said she was excited to hear about the freshmen next year.
