Soccer is back

Soccer’s absence as an official school sport raised some questions on why it is a club instead of a school sport.

Head coach Kasey Doorn said funding was a big part of it not being a sport and that they are looking forward to the future.

Doorn is a veteran on the sidelines, entering her thirteenth year as head coach.

“I plan to coach around five or six more years,” Doorn said.

Starting in 2022, the soccer team will get an official field and by 2024 they will be a member of the IHSAA (Indiana High School Athletic Association).

The Cougar’s first match of the 2019-2020 season is a non conference game against Culver Community where the final score was 2-0 in favor of the Cougars.

Sophomore starter, Trenten Chalik thinks that they are improving every year and by the time they join a conference they’ll be the team to beat.

“Every game we are usually the underdog, but in a couple of years New Prairie soccer will be a really good team,” Chalik claimed.”

The senior captain Luke Ackerson leads this team every time they step onto the field and also thinks they have real potential in the future and can compete any day against any team.

“I think this team has potential,” Ackerson claimed, “Last year we were good, too, but it helps having 8 seniors, and now it’s our job to pass on our knowledge to the underclassmen.”

Ackerson is an experienced player and has played since kindergarten and has always played under coach Doorn.

“This team is different from other teams due to the bonding, I think this is the closest I’ve been to my teammates and it’s nice knowing that we have each others backs” Ackerson explained.
